Shawn T. Smith, D.M.A. B.M in Music Education, Boise State University Dr. Shawn Smith is an Assistant Professor of Music and Director of Bands at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi where he conducts the Symphonic Winds, teaches courses in Conducting and Music Education, and serves as head of the wind and percussion division. Smith holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in conducting from Arizona State University, and Masters and Bachelors degrees from Louisiana State University and Boise State University respectively. In demand as a clinician, conductor, and adjudicator, Dr. Smith has been invited to work with bands in Texas, Utah, Arizona, Louisiana, and Idaho, and has guest conducted in a number of states. He recently presented a clinic titled "Stop Practicing! Making Music in the Instrumental Rehearsal" at the Texas Music Educators Annual Convention. He has also conducted the Texas Region XIV Concert Band and serves as an adjudicator for American Classics Music Festivals. Prior to his position at TAMUCC Dr. Smith worked as a Graduate Teaching Assistant in the School of Music at both Arizona State University and Louisiana State University. As a Teaching Assistant with the Sun Devil Marching Band Smith arranged music and wrote drill which was performed before nearly 50,000 spectators in the 2004 Vitalis Sun Bowl held at the University of Texas El Paso. As a public school teacher, Dr. Smith served as Director of Bands
and Orchestra at one of the largest high schools in Idaho where he
administered a comprehensive instrumental music program. While at
Meridian High School, ensembles under his direction were distinguished
as among the finest in the state. Dr. Smith has been published in the Journal of the World Association for Symphonic Bands and Ensembles and has presented research on the wind music of Brazilian composer Heitor Villa-Lobos at the national conferences of the College Music Society and the College Band Directors National Association. He has been included in Who’s Who Among American Teachers, and is a member of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia and Kappa Kappa Psi . He also holds memberships in the Texas Music Educators Association, the College Band Directors National Association, the National Band Association, the College Music Society, and the World Association for Symphonic Bands and Ensembles. |
